Amazon is building 11 more solar farms in the U.S., including its first in Pennsylvania and another in Ohio. The projects, announced June 23 along with renewables projects in Canada, Finland and Spain, will make the company the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in the U.S. and the world.

For many Ohioans, the first time they hear about the Ohio Power Siting Board is when a solar or wind project is proposed in their town. That's also when they find out how little power they have to effect change. SB 52 could change that.

The Ohio Power Siting Board set dates for in-person public hearings to receive input on three new solar projects proposed in Union, Erie and Crawford counties. Public hearings have been held virtually for more than a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Solar growth is outpacing any other type of new energy generation source in Pennsylvania, but local governments may not be prepared to handle these new projects. A review of the state’s local zoning ordinances found that 87% of zoning codes provide no guidance on solar developments.

Ohio’s agricultural commodity groups spoke out against legislation that proposes giving more local control in the approval process for utility-scale wind and solar projects. The Ohio Pork Council, Cattlemen’s Association, Dairy Producers Association and Poultry Association warned against passing legislation that would infringe on farmers’ private property rights.

The new mechanism for local control was created in part to address concerns from the renewables industry that the original bill would have resulted in a de facto moratorium on large-scale wind and solar development. But the solar industry says it was never consulted on the drafting of the new bill language.

The Ohio Power Siting Board will hold a public hearing regarding Pleasant Prairie Solar Energy LLC’s proposal to build a 250 megawatt solar farm on about 1,700 acres in Pleasant and Prairie townships in Franklin County.
