Fossil fuel consumption was at its lowest level in 30 years in 2020, while energy consumption from renewables hit a record high. While 2020 was not a normal year, the data point to a changing U.S. energy landscape.

The Ohio Power Siting Board will hold a local public hearing Sept. 28 regarding a proposal to build a 100 megawatt solar farm in Marion County. The project would cover about 970 acres and include a 20 MW battery storage system.

The Ohio Power Siting Board will hold a local public hearing regarding AEUG Union Solar, LLC’s proposal to build a 325 megawatt solar farm, in Union County. The project would cover about 2,013 acres within a 3,355-acre project area, in Washington and York townships.

The Ohio Power Siting Board approved applications for two more solar projects during its July 15 meeting. Within the last month, the board has approved 877 megawatts of solar energy to be constructed in the state.

As solar sites grow in size and number in Ohio and Pennsylvania, it could be a new business opportunity for sheep farmers. But it's an opportunity that comes with many strings attached.

An in-person hearing is scheduled Aug. 19 for a 144 megawatt solar farm planned for Champaign County.  The project, proposed by Clearview Solar I, LLC, would be located 1,075 acres within a 1,195 project area in Adams Township.

An in-person hearing is set at 6 p.m. Sept. 8 for a 101 megawatt solar farm planned for Wood County. It's one of five hearings set for this summer for 875 MW in proposed solar projects in Ohio.

Public hearings are set for two new proposed solar farms in central Ohio: Prairie Prairie Solar in Franklin County and Union Ridge in Licking County. There is nearly 4,000 megawatts of solar farms awaiting approval before the Ohio Power Siting Board.

In a rare move, the Ohio Power Siting Board denied Republic Wind's application to build a 200 megawatt wind farm in Seneca and Sandusky counties. Community activists celebrated the rejection, while the developer, Apex Clean Energy, cried foul.

An in-person hearing is set for a 300 MW solar farm planned for Hardin County.  The hearing for Hardin Solar Energy III is scheduled for 6 p.m. July 13 at Kenton High School, 200 Harding Avenue, Kenton, Ohio 43326.
