The world wastes more food than you think.

According to The Economist, the European Union wastes 198,416 pounds of food each year, and the U.S. adds 132,277 pounds of spoiled food to that number.

In order to combat this growing problem, several apps have been developed to reduce the amount of wasted food and to help the less fortunate by providing them with the food instead of letting it go to waste.

One app that has been developed is Food Cowboy. This app allow food producers and transporters to find out which food banks and charities are in need of donations, based on what food is available for donation. Another app is FoodLoop, a service in Germany that helps people find foods nearing expiration at discounted prices.
