Fuel-efficient vehicles are possible

As I sat in my vehicle on a southeastern mountain road in Colorado, I looked at the 2-inch-by-4-inch component of plastic called a cell phone – punched in a few numbers – and soon was talking to my wife 1,600 miles away as if she were beside me. Amazing – almost unbelievable – a space capsule shuttle launched from earth controlled completely by computers here on earth. Unbelievable.

Then I looked up at my digital pickup truck instrument panel and saw I was averaging 12 1/2 miles of road per gallon of fuel and it angered me.

I strongly believe that sometimes the obvious is camouflaged by routine. In other words, combustible engines that use lots of fuel are on the assembly line, so don’t make waves.

Although we are held hostage by high fossil fuel prices; the worst is yet to come. If you drink a beverage through a straw, you soon hear the sucking of air, it’s empty – no more – all gone.

Do we wait for this to happen – so we can park our gas guzzling vehicles in the front yard and plant flowers in them – walk to an Amish farm and make a deal on a horse and buggy? One does not have to be a rocket scientist or a genius, only rely on common sense to see that we are headed for a brick wall at full speed. If they can develop a 2-inch-by-4-inch piece of plastic that you can talk to people half way around the world, then battery-operated vehicles, with small engines running generators to recharge these batteries could produce vehicles that would travel 200 miles per gallon.

Possible, absolutely. But big oil does not want to allow this … nor would government be able to handle to 90 percent reduction of tax revenue from the fuel pumps. God bless America again.
