Business Profile: Ziegler Tire

MASSILLON, Ohio — With the economy struggling and the business climate only lukewarm, companies are coming and going. In some cases, customers aren’t sure who to turn to for their needs.

But despite the doom and gloom, those looking for dependable tires have peace of mind. That is, if they are shopping at Ziegler Tire.

90 years

The company, founded by Harold Ziegler, Sr. in 1919, is still going strong and celebrated its 90th anniversary in April. There are stores in Akron, Dover, Lorain, Steubenville, Youngstown, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Norwalk, Columbus, Massillon, Detroit, Mich. and western Pennsylvania. Ziegler’s is also open for business in Buffalo, N.Y., Independence, Ky., and Washington, Pa.

The company’s selection includes new tires, including farm, industrial, off the highway, large truck, small truck, passenger car and implement. Brands featured are Firestone, Armstrong, Michelin, Bridgestone, Dayton, Kelly, McCreary and Michelin.

Services include retreading, rims and wheels for industrial, truck and farm use.

This is the first year in many years that Ziegler’s did not increase its locations. Business in 2008 was uncertain, except for the farm tire and wheel business, which did increase.

Still rolling

A downturn in most businesses, especially the steel business, has affected Ziegler’s, but farm business has increased and the company continues to prosper in tough times.

“We are increasing our sales contacts in an attempt to gain new customers and we are cutting expense in every area of the business — large or small,” said Harold E. Ziegler Jr., assistant treasurer.

“We’re staying focused on what we do best, staying optimistic in our attitudes and helping others who are in need by providing special services to those who are laid off.”

The future

Ziegler’s is optimistic that in a year, business will be the same as at the middle of 2008. The goal in the next five years is to have more locations and an increase in sales and service.

Ziegler Tire Company is located at 4150 Millennium Blvd., SE, in Massillon. Hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
